Miriam Aguiar is a 5th generation farmer from southern Minas Gerais. With a degree in Rural Administration and Development, Miriam has always looked for ways to improve coffee supply and value chains with an emphasis placed on more sustainable and equitable practices. In 1993, she and her husband converted their farm,Fazenda Cachoeira, into a fully organic farm. In addition to producing some of the highest quality coffee in southern MG, Miriam is a huge part of the success of BD Imports Black Producers Program which makes up the majority of Sepia Coffee's coffee offerings from Brazil.
Taking Miriam's words from The Triumph: The success of Black Brazilian farmers means a new and impressive reality which goes beyond an economic opportunity. It brings a new message to the local(and we'll add…international) coffee community that establishes a new social positioning for Black/Brown producers. In a country where the majority of citizens are Black - representation is essential to give hope and to encourage other Black Brazilians to return to coffee and enter industries which before may have seemed impossible. If Black Brazilian growers are recognized for their hard work, the local market will become stronger and more inclusive.
We have sourced Miriam's coffee since we started and are proud to have one of her micro lots on offer this season. Miriam Aguiar Lot 33 is full of bright berries, floral undertones and sweet yogurt acidity.
Stop by to enjoy it on our Marco SP9 or take home a retail bag. Limited supply will also be available through several of our wholesale partners across Metro-Detroit.
